Summary of the 8th SOS Mentoring II Webinar, 20.10.2021


The summary of the eight and last webinar for mentors and mentoring programme facilitators organised in the frame of the global initiative SOS Mentoring II is for both the participants and for those who could not attend. We have discussed similarities and differences of mentoring, coaching, tracking, consulting and psychological support.

Many mentors must undertake several of these roles hence it is important to differentiate between them and to leverage strong features of each of them for the benefit of the mentees. So at the start of the webinar mentors Irina Mikhailova, Olga Ofitserova, Ekaterina Geraskina, Julia Kozlova and Yaroslavna Kolomijtseva shared their experience relevant to each of the roles taking into consideration the conformity of their behaviour with the tasks set before their mentees.

Next, the participants brainstormed and assessed the five support roles upon five criteria of an international concept developed by Bob Garvey. Here are the results of this brainstorming:

A mentor applies developmental nondirective approach, future-oriented and longer-term, acting on a pro-bono basis.

A coach applies deficit nondirective approach, future-oriented, rather short-term, acting on a paid basis.

A tracker more frequently applies a combination of developmental and deficit approaches, generally more directive, future-oriented, long-term, acting on a paid basis.

A consultant: deficit nondirective approach, focused on the past plus future, short-term, acting on a paid basis.

A psychologist: developmental nondirective approach, focused on the past, long-term, acting on a paid basis.

Following the brainstorming, the webinar moderator Boris Tkachenko, founder of the Mentoring Institute, helped the attendees to further immerse in the topic and to analyse the similarities and differences in terms of:

  • The point of support, i.e. the one who provides support and his/her expertise, or the one who receives support and his/her experience;

  • Interference /non-interference scale (Bob Garvey Hands n vs Hands off).

Whatever are the differences between support roles there is an essential similarity, namely the skills of listening and asking questions and giving feedback when necessary. These skills rather than unwanted advice ensure real support and generate important decisions for our mentees.

Yaroslavna Kolomijtseva. Co-founder of the Residence of Coaching, Entrepreneur, Business coach, PCC ICF, Senior Mentor at the Business Coaching Institute, Tracker, Mentor.

Olga Ofitserova. Entrepreneur, Federal business coach and methodologist of the training programmes approved by the Ministry of Economic Development in the frame of SME Promotion/Acceleration National Project, Head of Women Entrepreneurship Committee at OPORA RUSSIA, Mentor, Coach.

Irina Mikhailova. Coach and consultant on delegation of authority, sales, Instagram broadcast, switchover from employment to own business, as well on Instagram blog irina.coach, Mentor at pro-women.ru, facilitated and managed a mentoring project at the Association of Russian-speaking coaches, supervised regional directors in a big company.

Ekaterina Geraskina. Entrepreneur, National speaker, co-authored 11 entrepreneurship training programmes, including on digital transformation, Expert of the digital transformation executive training center at the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration, Business tracker, Mentor, Moderator and expert on management systemic approach, Expert on introduction of changes.
