YBI’s Global Mentoring Day 2022 September 14th – brief summary

Three hours flew by. Over 180 mentors from 30 countries worldwide attended. The event was hosted by Jo Gray, John Cull and Boris Tkachenko, who are familiar to the participants of previous annual Mentoring Days.

YBI's Mentor of the Year 2021, Caxton Njuki from Sweden, addressed the participants with an opening speech.

Mentors from India, Mongolia, Belgium, Nigeria, Brazil and Barbados were entered as finalists of this year. Each of them was presented by his/her mentee, who told about received support and an impact on a mentee’s business development and personal growth. The mentors explained what had motivated them to engage in mentoring and how they benefited from it.

Mentoring managers from India, Mongolia, Belgium, Nigeria, Brazil and Barbados told about their mentoring programms implementation and the efforts to support and motivate mentors.

Split in small groups, mentors discussed their challenges and solutions. It turned out the basic challenges were common to all, namely in brief:

• Encouraging mentees to be open
  
• The issues of meeting mentee’s expectations
  
• Mentee’s readiness to contribute earnestly to his/her personal growth and mentoring relationship
  
• Mentees do not fully appreciate the time and efforts spared by mentors
  
• The issues of online mentoring if a mentee does not have an access to an appropriate technology
  
• The balance between short- and long-term goals

A presentation from famous author, mentor and coach Mike Pegg on the Positive Encourager Approach highlighted a different perspective on mentoring.
